The importance of active listening

I’ve noticed that active listening can truly make or break a customer service call. I had a situation last week where a client was frustrated over a billing error, and by just paraphrasing their concern back to them, it diffused the tension significantly. It’s a simple technique, yet so often overlooked.

And absolutely agree — paraphrasing really shows the customer you’re engaged. I once had a case where a customer’s frustrations about a product were completely turned around by restating their issue. They even mentioned feeling heard, which made all the difference.

I’ve found that sometimes the tone of your voice can really enhance the feeling of being heard. I once had a customer tell me, ‘It’s just nice to talk to someone who sounds like they care.’ Have you ever experienced that in a tough call?

It’s interesting how something as simple as nodding while on a call can reassure customers you’re really with them. I once had a client say it felt like I was right there in the room! @noah47, ever tried it?
